Fuse board and consumer unit replacement
Old fuse boxes, boards without RCD protection and boards damaged by heat or water, replaced with a modern RCBO board. Fully tested and registered with building control.
Signs your board needs replacing
- Rewireable fuses with fuse wire, or a wooden or plastic-fronted fuse box
- No RCD protection, or only partial protection
- An EICR has coded the board C2 and it needs fixing within 28 days
- Scorching, a burning smell or a hot board
- Nuisance tripping that takes out half the house at once
- You are adding an extension, EV charger or new kitchen

Consumer unit questions
How much is a new consumer unit?
It depends on how many circuits you have and what the testing shows, so I give a fixed quote rather than a guess. WhatsApp me a photo of your current board and I can usually give you a price the same day.
How long does it take?
Most domestic board changes take a day. The power is off for most of that time, and I will tell you in advance so you can plan around it.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. A board change is notifiable work. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and I register the job with building control through NAPIT, so you receive the compliance certificate too.
What if the testing finds other faults?
Old wiring sometimes shows faults once a modern board is fitted. If that happens I explain what I have found and what it costs before doing anything more.
Thinking about a new board?
Send a photo of your current one and I will tell you what it needs.
